Jesse and Ruby, A Guam Legion

My awesome friend Ria introduced me to this band who plays at a local Hotel almost every night! Ria is in the white shirt and she has introduced not only to this band but also to the hashing experience and local food and much much more, plus she is just so much fun to hang out with I feel like I have a new Chamoro Sister! Thanks Ria!
These guys are fabulous! You should youtube them, you will feel like you are in the islands even from cold St. Charles!

Talafofo Caves

The cave experience was alot of fun, had to get over a few fears of tight spaces but I did it. Not to say I won't be scared if I ever get to do it again!
And yes, I am in the same clothes as the hash I just talked about! I went cave exploring in the morning and hashing that night! Needless to say I am sore today. Today I am updating the blog, skyped the family, sang Happy Birthday to Mark, and doing laundry while watching a true classic, "you've got mail".  Also went to church to thank Jesus for a safe  ending to a crazy day last night and planning to see a movie at the mall in a few hours with the other dietitian.  28 days to go!

www.hashguam.com on Mount LamLam of Guam

The above website is not all that fancy but can give you an idea of what I did last night! What a crazy time I had last night on my first Hash. The jist of it is that you drink, run a hike in the jungle of Guam and drink some more and hope not to get lost or left behind! The hike is different every time and two "hares" get a 10 minute head start to run a race they set up themselves. They mark the trail with biodegradable tape and flour (who knows why) and then it is a race to the end. I participated in my first (and probably last) hash last night, minus the drinking. I stuck with water and a celebratory soda afterwords! Plus a big plate of fried rice to post carb load! Don't get me wrong, I had a fun time but I don't want to risk getting hurt just 4 weeks before departure!
This was at the top of the mountain. The story goes that every Good Friday the people of Guam (a very Catholic Island) have a procession to the top of this mountain carrying a cross and reenacting the crucifixtion of Jesus Christ. There is an actual path that is not too difficult to follow but during the Hash we did not follow the true path. I wanted to go to the top of this mountain before I left so last night I killed two birds with one stone, a hash and get to the top of Mount Lamlam.
I have never been so muddy and so stinky in all my life. The whole way down the mountain was a butt slide down mud. I have never been on a mud slide before, I've had the drink called mud slide and I've enjoyed it but never slid down a mountain on my butt down the mud. It was fun, but scary, the only thing that stopped you was a cluster of tall grass and then you take a few steps to the left and slide some more. I am so thankful I did not break or twist anything! I think I was one of the last people down the mountain but I was with 3 other women so I wasn't alone. Last but NOT least! This is the beginning of the post party, but as I said, I just got a drink and a snack and went out to dinner with my friends...maybe we should start something like this in Saint Charles!

Good Friday in Guam

I'm not sure what they call this hill/mountain but as you can see there are multiple crosses on the top. From what I was told this weekend anyone here is invited to go on a journey to the top of the hill on Good Friday. Different men take turns carrying a cross like Jesus did on Good Friday to his crucifiction and anyone is welcome to go on the journey with them. I think hundreds of people participate each year. I would really like to do that but I won't be here on Good Friday. I may try doing the hike by myself before I go. I think that it would be a very emotional experience on Good Friday.

Well I have tried to update my blog alot today since I haven't posted anything in a week. Now you know what I have been up to this past week or so. 32 days to go and I hope they pass quickly, I am redy to get home.

Roaches

OK- Guam is great but this past weekend makes me appreciate my clean house, yes it may be cluttered, but there is no TWO INCH COCK ROACHES in my home in St. Charles. Friday night I screamed like a horror movie as a roach crawled across my bedroom floor, as I tried to hit it with a shoe it kindly went under my bed!  Mark was not expecting that early morning call, he had to convince me to get in my bed and that a roach wasn't going to crawl into my ear while I slept. I hate this Navy Inns and Suites. I have had ants and cold showers and now roaches!!  If I had to pay the bill, it wouldn't happen. I would not pay a penny of my own money for ants, roaches, and cold showers. Since the navy is paying  I have no choice.  By the way the next morning I saw him again and he did not get away this time. I could go to the closet where he tried to hide and take his picture for you all but I am trying to forget it is in there...so no picture of the roach.
I have been away from the blog for over a week...I guess time is going fast on Guam, but not fast enough...I think I have hit my limit of pleasure and I am ready to head home. I have so much respect for all the military men and women that spend so much time away from their families but I certainly hope I do not ever have to spend this much time away from my family ever again.

As for my latest adventures I spent the past weekend with a special friend of mine I met when I was in Japan on my 2 week AT for the Navy about 9 yrs ago, Ms. Kiyomi. She came over on Friday and spent the weekend with me. We haven't seen each other in about 5 yrs when she came to the USA to visit with me and my family.
We had a great time out together and touring the island together. We headed up North to Ratidian beach at the very northern tip of the island. It was the most beautiful white, smooth sand and clear blue water...gorgeous!!

Then the next day we headed down south to find the exact opposite type of beach...hard to tell from this picture but the sand is black. It comes from volcanic rock deep under the island (according to our friend/tour guide). It was still cool to see, but not the beautiful beaches of the north!
This is called "Bear Rock" as it is said to look like a bear! I think every single state has some rock that looks like something...funny!

Anyway, It was a fun weekend and so great to see my friend.

More fun in Guam

Is that a chicken crossing the road, no a Carabao...I see these all around the island and especially right outside my apartment in the green field near by.  So the story goes that there is one guy who lives in town with his carobao and booney dogs (muts) and you can see him walk along the road with the booney dogs riding on the back of the carabao...and at Christmas the dogs were dressed up in santa hats! I haven't seen him yet but I always have my eyes open.
Today I went up north to explore. Anderson Airforce base is up there and I ended up on this jungle road (off base) with more potholes than I have ever driven on in my life. (thank goodness it was a rental car) This little chapel (I suppose) was on the side of the road. And below you can see the view from the road to the beach actually on the base. It was raining most of the day but right before I was heading back to the south side (Navy side), the sun peaked out for a few minutes...then rained the whole drive home.
It was pretty good day, ready to get back to work tomorrow. Until next time.

Saturday Hikes with Rec an Crew

Last week I went on a nice hike with an organization on base called Rec and Crew...it was really fun. The top picture is down by the ocean at our destination. the middle picture is at the top of the hike looking down on the water.
Unfortunately for this blue starfish, he dried up on the beach. It reminded me of the story about the boy who walks down beach throwing the starfish back in the ocean when someone saw him and asked him why he bothered doing that because there was so many startfish and he could never save them all...what did it matter....and the boy picked up another starfish and threw it back in the ocean and says "it matters to him".  So we can all keep that in mind when we go through our days and wonder why we should say hello or smile or open a door for someone, because it may not seam like a big deal but it matters to someone...make someones day by doing something thoughtful.  You don't know how many small chats have made my day here while I am away from home and I am so thankful complete strangers took a few minutes out of there day to brighten mine.

Corrine in the kitchen

Now I know why my sister invited Corrine to SC, too do the cooking...my sister never was a big fan of cooking. It actuallly looks green, could that be a vegetable she is cooking....way to go Corrine if that is indeed spinich! Looks like she is having fun, can't wait to get home and have Corrine cook me some dinner.  6.5 more weeks to go.

Corrine's last day at Grandma's house

Corrine is getting to spend a few weeks in South Corolina with her cousins...she even gets to skip a few weeks of school!! However, Aunt Bridget is used to homeschooling, so Corrine will stay on top of things I'm sure! Plus she may learn a few things I'm not ready for her to learn yet since I hear she is up until 11pm most nights and watching PG 13 movies...I think we put an end to that though! My sister forgot what it is like to have a 6 yr old in the picture!

But really, I know she is having a great time and it is a once in a young life's opportunity to spend a few weeks alone with the cousins. I hope it is a good experience for everyone.

Corrine on her way to Iowa!

Looks like the car is loaded and she is off to Iowa with her cousins and her Aunt and Uncle...she looks so excited and made it up until 3 minutes out of the hills and the puking began from car sickness...1 stop at the dollar store for new clothes and they were on their way with no more epidsodes after that...what a trooper!

Friday Night at Table35

Well no matter the weather in Guam, I am still white! I will not be coming home with a tan...
This is my friend Peach, (she was/is James's cousin, but now she is my friend) her and her guy (Jr-the one who drinks his beer with a straw-see below) invited me out to Table 35 Friday night. Jr's Auntie was singing with the band and it was a great time. Always a great time with the wonderful people of Guam!
These were the best snails in a reduction wine sauce I have ever had, it was so good I almost licked the plate!
This looks pretty bad, but he actually chipped his front tooth earlier in the week and he didn't want the cold beer hitting his tooth!

AFU My 18 year old cat

Mark just bought a heated blanket for himself when he works from home...apparently AFU thinks he bought it for her...typical cat! She seems to be doing just fine without me but I do talk to her on skype once in awhile so she doesn't forget my voice. I do miss having her loud purr and warm body on my lap when I watch tv...I should have brought her with me. Hernit crabs are just not cuddly at all!

Mark sent this picture to me today and I just thought I would share with my friends.

Have a great evening everyone!

B

Christmas from Kiyomi

This is a picture Mark shared with me from Christmas, the boys opening up their gifts from our special friend and the kids penpale from Japan. Jo also got a hat with a cat on it that he hardly ever takes off!

JoJo's birthday cars rice krispy treat cake!!

Way to go Grandma and Grandpa...you did a great job on the cake.

Sunday

So today has been a kind of quiet day for me. I worked on Continuing Education so I do not get my RD (registered dietitian) license taken away...I have to do 75 hours in 5 years. My five years are up in 16 months and I only have 20 hours completed...50 more to go. I am trying to get a good chunk knocked out while I am on the island because it is so hard to get done at home. I really don't want to have to worry about it anymore...

I also ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill today and it really didn't hurt that much...could I really be improving?? I think I am going to shoot for the cow bell half marathon in October if St. Charles has it again this year. I surely won't be ready in April for the GoSt.Louis 1/2 marathon.  Any takers?? everyone ignored my last request. If no one is interested I will probably sign up with fleet feet to train with them so I have some accountability when I get back. They have running groups.

I went to church today and the music was awesome. It always makes me miss my family so much since church is such a family event back home, I miss holding Jo Jo in my lap/arms while I sing. I still sway back and forth even when I am not holding him, people probably think I have "problems" swaying for no reason in church!!!

Right now I am at the USO using their computers, actually a MAC. I like the keyboard and the screen is large so I can actually see what I am typing, unlike my tiny tiny tiny tiny laptop. My eyes are shot, can't wait for my eye apt on the 18th so I can get the glasses I so desperately need.

Well the USO is starting to close up so I will sign off and post this...still can't get videos to upload at home...ugggg. Will post more pictures soon. This is an orchid that grows in a field like wild flowers...cool.

One last shout out to a special friend's husband...I'm sorry the Lion's lost. Better luck next season. I was really rooting for you!

Hugs,
Brandee

Friday-Jo Jo's Birthday today!

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. The last few blogs I posted I tried to post small videos and it never works, I am frustrated so I have quit trying for awhile. I will update with more pictures this weekend.

Guam is is the same, low of 76 high of 88 short showers throughout the day! Saw another beautiful rainbow yesterday...amazing. This past Tuesday was an interesting day...I was on a radio talk show to talk about folica acid month and healthy changes for the new year! It was fun, never been on a radio show before. I was super nervous but it went fine. Then I went to a Thia food shack (take out only) and locked my keys in the car while it was running! Took Avis an hour to get there-Island time and then back to work.

Later in the evening I went to big Navy base to work out, took a turb kick class (I still have a headache from all the jumping around) and on my way home got stopped by the cops doing random car checks! This 04 did not have her drivers license or her rental agreement in the car! Not good, I thought I was going to jail for the first time in my life. Luckily he gave me a warning and I was off...What a day.

Wednesday I went to see We bought a Zoo, cute movie and a pedicure...life is tough here!

Last night I watched parenthood and biggest loser on the http://www...i%20'm/ a big loser for the doing that!
